'Spider-Man' director has signed on to bring “World of Warcraft“ to the big screen.

Sam Raimi, director of the "Spider-Man" films, has taken on a new project involving the most popular online multiplayer game of all time.

According to Reuters, Raimi will direct a film based on the "World of Warcraft" video game, which has claimed more than 11.5 million viewers and the Guiness World Record for the biggest online game ever. The film is still in development, and no release date or cast members have been revealed yet.

However, the film could be released in 2012. Currently, the project will be delayed until Raimi finishes directing "Spider-Man 4." Legendary Pictures, the company who brought "300" and "The Dark Knight" to the big screen and co-financed "The Watchmen," has signed on to help release the "Warcraft" film.

E! Online reports that Blizzard Entertainment, the production company behind the online game, is confident that Raimi will help to create a successful film adaptation. In turn, Raimi said he is "thrilled" to take on the project. Raimi has previously finished the film "Drag Me To Hell," which recently hit the big screen.
